NWS RSO Post-doctoral call:

Development and verification of fundamental analytical techniques for radionuclide and stable element measurement in hypersaline fluids

Submission deadline (closed):

Monday 24th February 2025, 09:00

Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), via their Research Support Office (NWS RSO) is requesting applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) project entitled “Development and verification of fundamental analytical techniques for radionuclide and stable element measurement in hypersaline fluids” in the Radiochemistry Discipline area.

  • The aim of the NWS RSO is to develop a portfolio of research projects focused on NWS research priorities. The specific aims of the NWS RSO are to:
  • Develop the high-level skills required for the NWS research mission over the coming decades, and to help deliver the next generation of geological disposal researchers.
  • Expand the academic geological disposal research community throughout the UK and internationally.
  • Encourage collaboration and communication between NWS and the academic community.

This research project, under the Radiochemistry discipline, is expected to have a duration of approximately 18 months, and the target date for grant award is March 2025. Project proposals of longer duration, proposing more efficient use of available funds, are welcome. The assessment and contractual arrangements for the project will be administered by Nuclear Waste Services. The NWS RSO is seeking proposals from academic lead investigators for a PDRA based project within their group. The lead investigator will be responsible for recruiting a suitable candidate by the target award start date.

Proposals must be submitted using the application form below and e-mailed to rso-gdf@manchester.ac.uk by 09.00 on 24th Feburary 2025.  All applicants must accept the standard NWS grant terms, a copy of which is available below.

Further information regarding the scheme and the application process can be found in the Guidance for Submission and other documents below.

If you have additional questions, including about the grant agreement and ability to meet the deadlines, please contact rso-gdf@manchester.ac.uk within the clarification period, which ends on  10th February 2025.

NB – All clarification questions will be answered by NWS and posted publicly on the bursary call page of the RSO website.

Clarification Q&A

Q. Would the development of advanced X-ray spectroscopy methods to quantify relationships between salinity and actinide bonding behaviour be within the scope of this call?

A. The call is to develop and validate, preferably via a multi-instrument and/or multi-institution project, fundamental methods for radionuclide and stable element detection in brines, thus a submission focussed solely on developing advanced spectroscopic methods is unlikely to fulfil the objectives outlined. However, NWS welcomes submissions which feature novel and/or advanced methods in addition to the core scope outlined.
